HIGH PRODUCING FRIESIANS

GOOD FIGURES FOR SOUTHLAND COWS HERDS IN EASTERN DISTRICT Three very fine performances dominate the Friesian merit list for January. Lelburne Princess Ella Echo, an eight-year-old cow bred and owned by A. and R. Udy, Menzies Ferry, with a yield of 113.2411 b fat—the second highest return yet recorded in a month by any cow in Southland —is the star performer for the month. This cow produced 678.711 b fat as a three-year-old and 695.131 b fat as a four-year-old. She was sired by Rosevale King Echo Sylvia (Echo Sylvia Sir Griselda, imp.— R. Queen Sylvia Triumph, 10551 b fat), while her dam, Lelburne Princess Maudella Pride, 9051 b fat, including three months over 1001 b fat, is by a son of Carnation King Matador Betty (imp.) and from a daughter of Longbeach Big King. Some very fine performances are also being recorded by the pedigree Friesians at present under Government Official Herd Test. The January returns are headed by Lelburne Princess Maudena Pride with the splendid returns of 2883.01 b milk—an average of more than 931 b daily and 89.371 b fat. This high-producing slx-year-old matron was also bred by A. and R. Udy, and is a maternal sister to Lelburne Princess Ella Echo. These two sisters are daughters of Lelburne Princess Maudella Pride (Dominion Matador Pride-Guineaslea Maude), an outstanding producer herself, with 7861 b at four years, 7291 b at six years, and 9051 b fat at eight years. Maudena Pride was sired by Rosevale Count Echo Beets, a son of Count Korndyke Roberts Posch (imp.) and of Rosevale May Echo Beets, holder of seven certificates averaging 6941 b fat.

The Lauderdale Friesian herd, owned by Mr R. H. Dickie (Tuturau), which last season returned the remarkable average under Government test of 11,228.81 b milk and 412.271 b fat in 268 days from 38 cows, is during the current season again returning excellent figures under the same test. In November, 28 cows averaged 57.011 b fat; in December 30 cows averaged 57.141 b fat, while in January 33 cows averaged just under 501 b fat. Some exceptionally high individual yields have been recorded, including Lauderdale Sylvia Lilac 94.271 b fat, and Lauderdale Violet Zozo 87.01 b fat in November, and Lauderdale Lily Zozo 90.481 b fat and Lauderdale Lizzie 82.81 b fat in December.
