RECORD MEMBERSHIP RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION That the financial year of the association had closed with a new record in membership of 654, was a statement made, by the secretary (Mr G. L. Gerken) at a meeting of the executive of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association. The Mataura sub-association had ended the year with 105 financial members and the West Otago subassociation with 90. A letter received from the general secretary, Wellington, stated that the total financial membership recorded by the Gore association was excellent and headquarters congratulated those responsible for the wonderful recoid achieved. Those present at the meeting were: Messrs A. L. McDowell (chairman), J. McDonald, A. C. Steel, J. Ritchie, P. R. Stewart, M. Green, E. J. Columb, F. M. Murray, T. F. Rusbridge, J. Adams, W. D. Shelton, C. M. Wilson and G. L. Gerken (secretary). Messrs I. Cullen and A. Christie of the Mataura subassociation also attended. . Motions of sympathy were carried with the relations of Mr C. Woodward (Waikaia), who died recently, and with Mr J. Manson (Croydon Bush) m the recent death of his mother. Mr Adams reported on the annual meeting of the Lumsden sub-associa-tion which is now affiliated with the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association. The present membership was 47, and at least another 25 were expected to A letter was received from Smith and Dolamore, of Gore, stating that the trustees in the estate of the late Petei Anderson had instructed them to distribute the moneys which comprised the residue of the estate and they had pleasure in enclosing a cheque for £l5, which had been allotted to the Anzac Day funds administered by the association. , That she felt there must be numbers of men in the expeditionary force who had no one to think of them was a statement made in a letter received from Mrs A. Duncan, of Milton street. Gore. If the Gore Returned Soldiers Association could give the names ot such men from the Gore district she would see that letters and parcels were sent to them from time to time while they were away. _ , The secretary was instructed to thank Mrs Duncan for her generous offer and to supply her with the names of any such men known to the association. X xU It was decided to give £2/2/- to the funds of the Gore Plunket Society. Messrs A. C. Steel and A. Marshall (Mataura) were appointed to attend the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers Association, which is to be held at Wellington, beginning on May 1. Mr W. D. Shelton will also attend the meeting in his capacity as district vice-president. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the association on May 11. The Mataura delegates reported that the annual meeting of the Mataura sub-association be held on May 18. A decision was made to hold the usual Anzac Day parades and services on April 25. In the morning the members are to parade to the cemetery, where tokens will be placed on the graves of returned soldiers. Men are to be placed at the memorial to receive wreaths from the public. In the afternoon a parade is to be held, will leave the club rooms at 2 p.m. for the Regent Theatre, where a service will be held. The Rev. J. Badcock, of Waikaka, will be the speaker. The secretary was instructed to write asking the following to take part in the parade: Gore Municipal Brass Band, Gore Pipe Band, Mayor of Gore and councillors, Gore Infantry Territorial Volunteers, Gore Mounted Territorial Volunteers, Gore High School Cadets, Gore Girl Guides, Gore Boys Brigade. ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES The annual sports of the Gore High School were continued on the hostel ground on Monday and Tuesday in ideal weather. Competition was again keen and some good performances were given by competitors. The senior boys’ championship was won by N. Campbell with 10 points, R. Poskitt and C. Mac Gibbon being runners-up with eight points each. G. Barton and B. Humphries tied for the junior championship with 11 points each. The girls’ events provided some excellent competition and in the senior championship two pupils tied for first place. They were Honor Smith and Shirley Cameron. Sheila Buchanan was runner-up. Hope Newman won the junior championship and L. Jones was runner-up. Three girls, Joy Davidson, Nancy Wilson and Betty Christie, tied for third place.
