OBITUARY
SIR JOHN GILMOUR (Received March 31, 7 p.m.) LONDON, March 30. The death occurred suddenly of Sir John Gilmour, Minister of Shipping, at his London residence. Sir John Gilmour, soldier and statesman, was born in Scotland in May 1876, the son of the first baronet, who was Convener of the Commissioners of Supply for Fife and honorary colonel of the Fife and Forfar Imperial Yeomanry. In 1910 Sir John was elected Conservative member for East Renfrewshire. He served throughout the Great War, receiving the D. 5.0., being mentioned in dispatches and reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1920 and a year later was made a Junior Lord of the Treasury. For five years from 1924 he was Secretary for Scotland and after the office was raised to a Secretaryship of State continued in it till May 1929. On the formation of the National Government in August 1931, he was made Minister of Agriculture. Soon after the outbreak of the present war he was appointed Minister of Shipping.
