POULTRY NOTES

By ALEX PEAT Mr W. Jordan presided over a wellattended meeting of the Invercargill Canary and Cage Bird Specialist Club on Saturday evening. A table show of Yorkshire, canaries was well patronized, the winners being N. Carter 1 and 2 and W. Greenall 3. The class was judged by Mr T. Smith and a judging competition on the entries resulted in a draw between Mr W. Taylor and Mr L. Taylor. Entries will close for the young bird show on March 30. The Breeders’ Stakes for the South Island branches of the New Zealand Federation of Cage Birds will be awarded at the following shows and the entries close with the secretary, R. Newton, 23 Avondale road, Avondale, Auckland, on April 30, 1940. Norwich canary.—Dunedin, May 31, June 1. Yorkshire canary.—lnvercargill, June 27 and 28. Budgerigar.—Christchurch, June 21 and 22. Foreign finches. —Mataura, July 5 and 6. After the next fortnightly meeting a table show will be held for Norwich canaries which will be judged by Mr W. Taylor. WATCH FOR WORMS After heavy rain such as we have had recently wet patches are sure to occur in the fowl runs and’ these are where worms are liable to breed. Wet spots are often found round the drinking tins. The round worm which may be detected on the dropping boards is very common among poultry. The eggs of the round worms develop in wet spots in the run and that is why these are a danger. Dosing with tobacco dust is a common means of getting rid of round worms. One pound of the dust is soaked overnight in water and in the morning mixed with four pounds of mash. This is enough for 100 adult birds. They should be starved for 24 hours before they are fed the mixture or they will not eat it. The mash should be placed in troughs and all water vessels removed. About two hours later give water in which Epsom salts is dissolved. The best time to worm a flock is when the fowls are moulting or just before the pullets begin to lay. The morning after the flock is treated the house in which they are kept must be thoroughly cleaned out and all litter burned as this contains the worms discharged by the fowls. These are now ready to lay their eggs, which will again be picked up by the birds to hatch in their bodies and continue the cycle of parasitism which destroys the constitution of the birds. Fowls are also liable to pick up tape worms and the treatment for getting, rid of them is the same as for round worms. Signs of worm infestation are unthriftiness of the birds, poor laying and weakness. The feathers are dry and lose their glossy appearance and the birds stand about and are not alert and active.
