COUNTY COUNCIL’S STAFF PICNIC

The members of the Southland County Council Sports Club held their annual picnic at The Rocks, Riverton, on Monday, when fine weather contributed to a successful gathering. A fairly extensive sports programme was run off and an enjoyable cricket match concluded the afternoon’s fun. At the conclusion of the picnic, the president of the Sports Club (Mr A. Smiley) presented the prizes to the following successful contestants: County Handicap—G. Anderson 1, B. Noble 2, G. McKenzie 3. Young Men’s Race —R. J. Acklin 1, R. Young and A. L. Smiley equal 2. Young Women’s Race—Miss M. Wohlers 1, Miss M. Mahoney 2, Miss E. Day 3. Married Women’s Race —Mrs Fraser 1, Mrs Breayley 2. Men’s Half-mile Championship—G. H. Bleakley 1, R. Walker 2, G. Anderson 3.

Old Buffers’ Race—E. Fraser 1, B. Noble 2, B. Breayley 3. Three-Legged Race—Miss Wohlers and Mr Anderson 1, Mr and Mrs Breayley 2. Women’s Stepping the Distance — Miss Day 1, Mrs Breayley 2, Mrs Fraser 3.

Relay Race—Engineer’s Department (Miss Day, Young, Smiley and Bleakley) 1, Rates Department (Miss Mahoney, Anderson, Acklin and Walker) 2. A keenly-contested cricket match ended in a narrow victory for G. Anderson’s team over a side captained by B. Noble.
