TWENTY SHIPS IN WEEK

Losses By Britain And Neutrals TOLL OF GERMAN CAMPAIGN (By Radio, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, February 20. In the week which ended on Sunday, 20 ships were sunk by enemy action —this is a record for one week. Of that number, 15 were neutral, of a total tonnage of 47,000 tons and five were British, of a total tonnage of 39,000 tons. This makes the total tonnage sunk by enemy action since the war began 1,000,000 tons.

Although high, this total looks much srfialler when it is remembered that in 1917 when the German indiscriminate sinking campaign was at its height, 900,000 tons were lost in one month. The odds at present of a ship being sunk in convoy are one in 472. Last week 160 neutral ships were convoyed safely. One of the 20 ships lost last week was sunk in convoy.

Since these figures were compiled, the Admiralty has announced that six more ships—three British and three neutral—have been sunk.
