MINISTERS FLYING TO LONDON TO ASK FOR AID ATTEMPT TO STOP RUSSIANS ON NEW DEFENSIVE LINE (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Received February 19, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 18. Reminiscent of Earl Haig’s famous “Backs to the Wall message in the last war, Field-Marshal Baron Carl Mannerheim, Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Army, has issued a message to the nation’s defenders. “The time has come,” he said, “when the enemy offensive must be baited by a new defensive line for the support of which I have sent new forces and artillery from the reserves. Finland no longer fights alone; help is coming continuously from abroad and there is every possibility of victory.” It is announced from Helsinki that the Finnish Prime Minister (M. Ryosto Ryti) and the Foreign Minister (M. Vaino Tanner) are going to London by air to ask for immediate military aid.
A Finnish request for the assistance of Swedish troops was rejected by Sweden. It is also reported that Finland can expect no aid from Norway.
