YOUNG MAN STRUCK BY TRAIN

OVERTAKEN ON TRACK (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 18. Struck by a train while walking along the railway track near the Petone crossing on Saturday afternoon J. D. Webster, aged 21, of Kent Terrace, Wellington, received head injuries and concussion and was taken to Wellington Hospital. His condition today was reported as satisfactory. The accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Webster was walking toward Wellington and apparently did not hear the train approaching from behind him though the driver gave a prolonged blast on the whistle. The train was travelling at about 10 miles an hour when it struck him. He was thrown to the side, down the bank, and landed heavily on his face. DROWNED IN HUTT RIVER BOY GOES TO SISTER’S AID (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 18. Getting into difficulties when he went to his sister’s aid James Gordon Holder, aged 16, of Kilminster avenue, Wellington, was drowned in the Hutt river at Maori Bank yesterday. Holder and his sister, Miss Miriam Holder, aged 17, and two other young people went to Maori Bank in the morning to attend a picnic. The four of them went in to bathe. Miss Holder stepped into a deep hole and her brother, who went to her assistance, immediately got into difficulties himself. One of the other two managed to rescue the girl, but Holder, who was apparently a poor swimmer, was drowned. His body was recovered in the afternoon. Miss Holder suffered from shock, but was able to return home after being attended by a doctor. YOUTH ACCIDENTALLY SHOT IN FOOT Ernest McNaught, aged 18 years, of Makarewa, was admitted to the Dee Street Hospital last night suffering from a bullet wound in his left foot. He was accidentally shot by a rabbiter when on the Southland racecourse reserve about dusk last evening. MOTORIST SUFFERS HEAD INJURIES When turning the corner of Nith and Forth streets in his car on Saturday evening, lan Alexander Hodge Logan, a married man, of Nith street, drove his car into some loose gravel The car skidded and ran into a stationary car parked outside the Southern Club. Logan’s head went through the windscreen of his car and was cut by the glass. He was admitted to the Dee Street Hospital for treatment.
