HEAVY RAIN IN CITY LAST NIGHT
MORE UNSETTLED WEATHER The weather was again unsettled in Invercargill during the week-end. Heavy rain fell on Saturday morning and although the sun shone in the afternoon scattered showers persisted. However, the weather cleared sufficiently to enable the sports meeting at the show grounds to be completed. Tennis and bowls matches were also played, but no cricket games were started because of the condition of the wickets. .
Yesterday afternoon a strong northwesterly wind sprang up and made conditions unpleasant. The wind dropped in the early evening and very heavy rain began to fall, continuing for about an hour. Heavy showers fell at intervals throughout the remainder of the evening. The weather continued unsettled in Eastern Southland on Saturday and heavy showers fell during the day. The temperature was warmer on Saturday night and the weather appeared to be more settled, but again yesterday morning rain fell. It was only a brief shower, however, and in the afternoon the sun shone brightly for about two hours. About six o’clock rain again began to fall, and, accompanied by a strong wind, it continued throughout the evening. The only sporting fixture to be held in Gore on Saturday was the first day of the Gore Racing Club’s meeting. The Eastern Southland bowling championships, which were to have been held at Mataura, were postponed, and all cricket and tennis competition matches were abandoned.
