COMFORT OF THE TROOPS

METHODS OF RAISING FUNDS That the idea of the scheme to raise funds for patriotic purposes was to limit duplication, expense and waste, was a statement made by Mr R. B. Bannerman at a meeting of the Gore District Patriotic Committee last night at which an executive was elected. IVfr Bannerman, who was elected chairman, outlined what he considered to be the best methods of raising funds in the town and district and stated that he favoured the direct appeal for cash which eliminated expense. A preparatory appeal had already been made in the town in which individuals had been asked to give £5/5/- and firms £lO/10/-. The appeal, which had been very limited, had been favourably received and well supported, £357 having been collected. The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) presided at the meeting and stated it had been called for the purpose of electing an executive. The meeting was fairly well attended, representatives of local organizations being present. Mr Bannerman was elected chairman and Mr D. Harvey was elected secretary. The following executive was appointed:—Messrs H. K. Edie, F. O’Connor, W. H. Whittingham, A. T. Newman, W. D. Shelton, H. H. Doughty, E. J. Columb, J. Y. Allan and the Rev. W. W. Powell and Mesdames R. W. McCreath, C. M. Wilson and D. McAskill.

The chairman and Messrs Shelton, Edie and Doughty were appointed a finance committee.
