NO CHALLENGES FOR DAVIS CUP
TROPHY RETAINED BY AUSTRALIA (Received January 31, 11.40 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 31. As no challenges for the Davis Cup had been received today by the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, the competition lapses for 1940 and Australia retains the cup. No challenges are expected for the duration of the war. The regulations require challenges to be received by the holding nation not later than January 31 on the year of play. Mr H. A. Pitt, acting chairman, said at the annual conference of the L.T.A.A. today, that it was unthinkable that Australia would be challenged in the present international circumstances.
