FOUR ENLISTMENTS YESTERDAY

Forty-four men from Southland who will serve as reinforcements for the Second Echelon left by the express yesterday morning for Burnham. The Ist Battalion Band, Southland Regiment, was present at the Invercargill station and played selections. Four men enlisted at the Defence Department at Invercargill yesterday for service overseas. They were:— A. W. Barnes, R. J. Dick, P. F. O’Brien, W. A. Reeves. Ten recruits were examined by the medical board at Gore yesterday, and of this number six were passed as fit for active service. One was held over for further examination and three were classed as fit for home service. MEN FOR FORESTRY UNIT TOTAL REGISTRATION OF G7O RECRUITS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 31. “The response to the call to form a forestry and logging unit for service overseas has been most gratifying,” states the Minister of Lands (the Hon. H. T. Langstone). “The specialized nature of the industry restricts the field from which recruits can be drawn and the total registration of 670 is therefore very pleasing. The sawmilling and wood-working industries, together with the State Forest Service find employment for 9500 men and considerably less than half are of the age and category suitable for military service so that 14 per cent, of the eligible men have put in their names. The registrations have been carefully scrutinized and the applicants are selected in such a way that the burden of loss will be distributed over the whole industry with no heavy concentration on any single industrial unit.”
