MARKSMAN’S PERFECT SCORE CLAY TARGET EVENT AT WELLINGTON (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 17. The most important trap-shooting event ever held in New Zealand was the 1940 Southern Hemisphere single rise clay target championship decided today at the centennial trap-shooting tournament of the New Zealand Gun Clubs Association. It was a 50-target event, all off 18 yards; seventy-four competed. The winner was C. Webber (Morrinsville) who made a perfect score of 50. The runner-up was M. Pratt (Otorohanga) who broke 49. There were no scores of 48 but 47 targets were broken by W. Oates (Tokomaru Bay), J. Mills (Hastings) and I. G. Watkins (Ranglora). The next best with 46 were A. N. Turner (Christchurch), C. E. Thomasen (Waitakururu), G. Bretherton (Masterton) and H. Grennell (Port Levy). Webber received £74 cash from a sweepstake, a trophy to the order value of £lB/10/- and a championship silk sash. Pratt received £37 cash, a trophy order valued at £9/5/-. J. Mills,_ W. Oates and Watkins each received £l2/6/8. Presenting the trophies, the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) congratulated Webber on hrs perfect performance. He said Pratt was one of the most consistent shots in New Zealand and a good sportsman. SWEEPSTAKE EVENT The £1 sweepstake attracted 45 competitors. Conditions were 15 targets from handicap marks on the five-tracK system. Possibles were broken by E. Groome (Otane) and C. E. Brown (Diamond Harbour). Each received £l5/6/- cash. J. Dobson (Hamilton), H. Grennell (Port Levy), L. Smith (Hutt), H. Carter (Otorohanga) and A. Walker (Hawera) each broke 14 and divided £5/8/- between them.
