ALL BLACK ENLISTS—A. W. Wesney, the second of Southland s All Black Rugby players to enlist in the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Wesney is an all-round sportsman who has represented Southland at cricket, Rugby and swimming. He played for Southland at Rugby in 1934, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939 and was a member of the teams which won the Ranfurly Shield from Otago at Dunedin in 1937 and 1938. In the 1937 game which gave Southland a sensational win by 12 points to 7 Wesney scored eight of the points. He heads the list of Southland scorers in Ranfurly Shield matches and a few seasons ago he scored 176 points in one season. He represented the South Island and New Zealand (in Australia) in 1938 and he was a member of the South Island team last season. In the sport of swimming he has gained many successes at diving and three times he was runner-up to the New Zealand diving champion. He is a member of the Old Boys Cricket and Football Clubs, the ExPupils Swimming Club and the Oreti Surf Life-Saving Club.
