Loan To Purchase Armaments
POSSIBLE PART IN WAR

The Turkish Government has asked the Turkish National Assembly urgently to pass a Bill ensuring national defence and national economy in the event of Turkey being involved in war. The Prime Minister, in the House of Commons, stated that under agreements signed in Paris on January 8 the British and French Governments undertook to lend Turkey £25,000,000 for armaments purchased in the United Kingdom and France, £15,000,000 in gold and £3,500,300 to liquidate arrears in Anglo-Turkish and Franco-Turkish clearings. The interest and sinking fund would be paid in Turkish goods, particularly tobacco. The British and French Governments had undertaken to purchase annually £2,000,000 worth of Turkish dried fruits. CANADA’S FIRST WAR LOAN NO QUESTION OF ABILITY TO STAND BORROWING RUGBY, January 16. The opening yesterday of Canada’s first national war loan of 200,000,000 dollars—£so,ooo,oo0 —resulted in subscriptions for 114,000,000 dollars. ■ Referring to this loan, The Times says: “There can be no question of the ability of Canada to carry an internal loan of this magnitude, for the war brings with it a great demand for Canadian foodstuffs and Canadian industrial products. Mr J. A. Ralston, the Canadian Minister of Finance, estimates that British purchases in Canada during the current yeai - will be between 400,000,000 and 500,000,000 dollars.
