RAIDS ON GAMING HOUSES

“DELIBERATELY BREAKING THE LAW” (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 29. “I am beginning to wonder whether the maximum penalty of £lOO should not be imposed on these people even for first offences. They are deliberately breaking the law and know it," said Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., dealing with charges arising from police raids on six gaming houses in the city on December 23.

All six men charged with being the occupiers pleaded guilty. Two were fined £3O each, one £5O, one £75, and two £lOO each, a total of £385. One man, for being unlawfully on gaming house premises, was fined £2.
