OBITUARY
MR E. GOLDSMITH
The death has occurred of Mr Edwin Goldsmith, a well-known resident of Mabel Bush, at the age of 90 years. Born at Staplehurst, Kent, England, Mr Goldsmith came to Bluff with his wife in 1874, the voyage being made in the sailing ship William Davie. Three months elapsed before the vessel reached the New Zealand coast. Mr Goldsmith later took up farming, settling at Mabel Bush. He had a good knowledge of stock ailments and his services were always in demand among his neighbours.
In 1871 he married Miss Frances Ann Kearn, who survives him. At the age of 89 Mrs Goldsmith is still active and enjoys good health. There were nine children, eight of whom are still living, besides 28 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren.
The surviving members of the family are Mrs J. Welsh (Mabel Bush), Mrs O. Burgess (West Plains), Mrs R. Mills (Invercargill), Mrs A. Haslemore (Waimahaka), Mrs T. Amos (Mabel Bush) and Messrs E. Goldsmith (Mabel Bush), T. Goldsmith (West Plains) and W. Goldsmith (Tihaka). A daughter, Mrs T. King (Rakauhauka) died 18 months ago.
