HOLIDAY RACING TRIALS

koyal chief’s good SPRINT DEFAULTER GIVEN WALKING EXERCISE (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, December 19. Features of the training operations at Riccarton today were half-mile tasks by Montessa, Nightcalm and Willie Win on the plough; a furlong gallop’ by St. Cloud; si* furlongs by The Wrecker; seven furlongs by Kilrobe and a mile by Scold and Cymric. The inside of the trial grass was open but the bulk of the galloping was executed on the plough. Nightcalm was one of J he J* I®* 1 ®* and he ran half a mile m 49 2-ssec, and his stable mate Montessa followed in 50 3-ssec. This pair will be taken ’south by C. Emerson for the Waikouaiti and Oamaru meetings and will probably be ridden by the stable apprentice, D. Corboy. Wilhe Win, who looks in remarkably bright order, impressed by comfortably covering the same ground in 50sec. He is an acceptor for the open sprint at Wingatui on the first day and if he carries on satisfactorily he will contest dls^P; ce events later on, including the Waikouaiti Cup.on New Years Day. St Cloud was always in front of Rebel Chief over five furlongs m Imin 1 3-ssec, Rebel Chief taking Imin 3sec. The Wrecker showed his usual track capability by running six furlongs in Imin 14 2-ssec, the last four in 50sec. KILROBE’S PROSPECTS Kilrobe soon opened up a break from Ferriby and Rebel Queen in a seven-furlong gallop and finished strongly in front in Imin 30sec, the first four in 49 4-ssec. Kilrobe would appear to have good prospects in the Federal Handicap (six furlongs) at Wingatm on Saturday. She will probably be tried over more ground before ■ returning home and there is every reason to suggest she will master middle disand Cymric finished together well clear of Rabble after covering a mile in Imin 42 3-ssec, the last three in 38sec. Soverign Lady strode over a mile in Imin 45sec, the last seven furlongs in Imin 29 l-ssec. Included, in the . morning’s work was ■an interesting three-furlong sprint in ■3Bsec by Royal Chief and Lord Lynn. The latter was in front until nearing the post where Royal Chief drew on terms. Racewell attracted attention by galloping six furlongs in Imin 16 3-ssec. Other gallops, were: Four furlongs: Shining Wings and Complexion, 50 2-ssec; : Tantivy and Great Night, 50 4-ssec;Not,Out, 51 2-ssec;.and Hostis beat Sir Frederick in 51 2-ssec. Five furlongs: Jan Ridd and Merry March, Imin 3 2-ssec; Fascinator beat Palmyra in Imin 4sec; Muriet beat Ageratum in Imin ssec. Six furlongs: Miss Tasta, Imin 17 i-ssec; Flame Queen, Imin 15 l-ssec; Phil, Imin 15sec; Royal Lassie and Bright Prospect, Imin 15 3-ssec; Shanghai Lily and Wine Card, Imin 18 3-ssec ' ■ Seven furlongs: Princess Minerva and Parquet, Imin 34sec. One mile: Rebel Lad and Pink Lad, Imin 45 4-ssec. On the grass, Wardress was always clear of Aggravate over six furlongs in Imin 16sec, the last four in 49 3-ssec. The former has come to hand well after her recent let up. In The Dark, who had his first success at the_ nontotalizator meeting at -Hurunui on Saturday, reeled off half a mile in 50 2-ssec.

Defaulter made his reappearance on the tracks and was given walking exercise round the middle. He carries the marks of a blister on his affected front leg but it is confidently considered the trouble has been cleaned up by the treatment. It is not likely, however, that he will be put to any test for some weeks yet. One of the smartest sprints was credited to Concert Pitch, who ran home three furlongs on the plough. He has fined down in the past week or so and will not require much more serious work to get him ready to race again.
