SCHOOL YEAR ENDS

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES WAIHOPAI AND SIDE SCHOOLS SPORTS HELD DURING AFTERNOON “At a time so near Christmas, when there is so much work to do, the attendance of parents and friends of the school at this ceremony has surprised me,” said the Mayor (Mr J. R . Hanan) at the break-up and prize-giving function at the Waihopai School yesterday afternoon. The interest of parents and friends was gratifying, he said. As each school year closed it brought the pupils a little further into the stream of life, and he hoped, he said, that they would remember, not only the things they had learned in the classroom, but also those things the playground had taught them —respect for the feelings of others, kindness, and an acceptance of the finer values of life. Mr Hanan congratulated the prizewinners on their achievements both in the classroom and on the field of sport. Mr W. Grieve, chairman of the - school committee, was chairman and asked the Mayoress (Mrs Hanan) to present the prizes of the Waihopai side school. He apologized for the absence of Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P. A former head master of the school, Mr Duncan McNeil, presented the prizes of the Waihopai school and spoke to the children. SOUTH The break-up ceremony of the Invercargill South School was held last evening in Stobo Hall. There was a large attendance of parents and pupils. The chairman of the school committee (Mr L. S. The school was at a disadvantage at present as there was not sufficient accommodation in the building for all the pupils. Consequently it had been found necessary to accommodate two classes away from the school. The chairman said that application had been made to the Southland Education Board for two new class rooms which it was hoped to obtain early in the New Year. When these were provided the overcrowding in the present class rooms would be relieved and the other two classes could return to the school building. Mr Alsweiler, on behalf of the school committee, thanked the parents for their support during the year, the teaching staff for its co-operation and the caretaker for his attention to the school and grounds. Dux medals were presented to Isabel Miller and Reginald Hall.
