Lieutenant-Commissioner J. Evan Smith, territorial commander for Wales and the Western territory of the United Kingdom, has been appointed territorial commander of the New Zealand Salvation Army, according to a cablegram received by Lieutenant-Colonel Grattan, chief secretary, from the London headquarters yesterday. The appointment was made by General Carpenter, the new commander of the Army. The new commissioner, who was born in London, served as a founder of the Army, in a secretarial capacity and was for many years private secretary to General Booth. He saw work in many lands including New Zealand and became chief secretary in South Africa in 1931 and was appointed territorial commander of Wales and the Western territory three years ago.—Press Association.

Mr F. W. G. Miller, formerly of the literary staff of The Southland Times, has been appointed secretary pro tern of the Automobile Association (Southland) during the absence with the special military force of the secretary (Captain M. C. Fairbrother). Mr H. S. Harbott, of the Post Office Savings Bank staff, Timaru, has received advice that he has been accepted for service with the New Zealand Base Post Office and will leave New Zealand with the special force. Mr L. Thomson, of the staff of Dickeys Ltd., who has been attached to the Royal New Zealand Air Force, leaves early next week for the north.
