LITTLE INTEREST IN OATS MARKET QUIET IN OTAGO SEED MARKETS REMAIN FIRM (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 15. Now that the market for milling wheat is finished for the year, interest is being centred in the new crop, and varying reports are being receivea from the wheat-growing areas. Crops in coastal areas of Otago are in good condition. The fowl wheat market is steady and the quality is worth 5/10 a bushel, sacks extra, in the wholesale market. Several lines have been offered from the southern districts, but the quality of this wheat is not of the best, being inclined to be thin. This wheat is selling at 4/9 a bushel, sacks extra, on trucks. Little interest is being shown in oats for shipment to the North Island and an occasional order is being received but there is now not much oats held in the local stores. Forward buying is still taking place and A Gartons have been sold for delivery in April ana September of next year at 3/8 f.o.b. s.i. Oats for prompt delivery may be quoted on the basis of 3/4 to 3/8 f.o.b. s.i. according to the quality.

The demand for chaff continues to be quiet. Only small stocks of chaff are held in stores but they are sufficient to meet the demand. Best quality is selling at £5/15/- a ton, sacks extra, ex store. Most of the trade in potatoes is now being done with supplies from the su r " rounding districts and Oamaru. Best quality potatoes are worth 3d to per lb. Auckland-grown tubers are still available and these are worth 2d to per lb „ , , All seed markets remain firm, but little wholesale business is going through. The retail trade is also quiet, as supplies of all seeds are on the short side. Merchants are satisfied to mark time and await the arrival of the new season’s crops. , , A prompt market is firm for both certified and ordinary ryegrass, as lines of good germination are difficult to procure. Poor quality germinating ryegrass seed is fairly plentiful but little attention is being given to this type or seed. Cocksfoot crops have also been affected by the dry weather. White clover seed continues m short supply. Inquiries from overseas for white clover and for cowgrass are keeping the markets for these seeds very firm. Montgomery clover is also in short supply and values are inclined to harden. . . , There are no inquiries from overseas for Browntop and the market is neglected. AUSTRALIAN ORANGES ARRIVE Another shipment of Australian oranges came to hand during the week and prices have again been raised by the Marketing Department, this tune by 3/- a case and the best large sizes are now quoted at 30/- a case. Sales are slow, buyers preferring to work on a hand-to-mouth basis in Y 3ew of the high values ruling. A small shipment of Australian lemons has reached the market and prices had to be obtained for this shipment by the Marketing Board. „ „ Small shipments of Cabforman lemons, Jamaican grapefruit and
