Five British Warships Keep Watch

CHOICE OF DESTRUCTION OR INTERNMENT

(By Radio —1.15 a.m.)

LONDON, December 15. The German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Speeis lying in Montevideo harbour, so damaged after her desperate fight with three small British cruisers that she can sail, but not fight. Her 11-inch guns are out of action. Five British warships are maintaining a “death watch” outside the harbour and it is considered an impossibility for the Admiral Graf Spee to escape. She has really little option. If she emerges she will be “blown out of the water” by the waiting warships. Many conflicting reports about the time the Admiral Graf Spee will be allowed to remain in Montevideo have been received. The British cruisers which drove the pocket battle* . ship to Montevideo came out of the encounter surprisingly well. The Exeter, which was forced to drop out of the fight because of damage, is now reported to be steaming away. The Achilles was unscathed and the Ajax is slightly damaged.
