HIGH STANDARD OF JUMPING

Championship Final Yesterday

PERFECT DISPLAY BY SCOUT

MISS J. WHITE CHAMPION RIDER

Jumping and horsemanship of a standard very rarely seen in the show ring was produced in the grand final of the Dominion Centennial Royal Championship Jump, the feature attraction of the show ring events yesterday afternoon. Ten finalists participated yesterday and although two did not complete the course the efforts of the others were of a high order. After completing the course of 16 fences, three candidates were required to jump a further eight fences to decide the winner. The first and second horses —Scout and Tip Toes—are both North Island representatives, from Carterton and Palmerston North respectively. In the run off over eight fences Scout, who was ridden by his owner Mr B. R. McGuinnes, gave a perfect display and scored the possible of 40 points. Scout is one of the finest show ring jumpers seen at Invercargill for some years and his record this season has been a fine one. His success at Invercargill was not his first important win, as this season he has already won five championship events in the North Island. Miss F. Jones, of Palmerston North was second on Tip Toes, another well-known show performer, while the Dunedin candidate, Miss N. Kerr’s Mystery, who won the second heat, jumped consistently throughout. Matchem, who was fourth may have been even closer, had he jumped the first round as well as he did the second. CHAMPION RIDER Miss F. White, of Palmerston North, who was prominent in the majority of the jumping competitions throughout the three days, was judged the best lady or gentleman rider to take part in the championship event. Miss White was thus awarded the special trophy valued at 5 guineas and presented by Mr J. S. Marshall. With her own horse, Kopere, Miss White also won the section for the best type of 11 stone hunter. A. field of 37 contested the event for the best hunter, and the judge’s task was no easy one. His selection of Mr D. R. McKenzie’s Lady Barkly as the first prize winner was well received. Lady Barkly is only a young hunter but a reliable and dashing jumper. The Handy Hunter competition went to Mrs A. Oliver, who rode her own horse, Silken Lady, to win rather a difficult class which drew 27 competitors. . . The winner of the Dominion Centennial Royal Championship Jump, Mr B. R. McGuinnes’s Scout was decorated with the champion ribbon by Mrs J. S. Marshall, of Invercargill, in the adsence of the wife of the president, Mrs Robert Kennedy. Cheers were given for horse and rider. A HIGH STANDARD “The jumping right through was exceptionally good, and the performances were of a high order,” commented the judge, Mr L. V. Caverhill, of Masterton. He said that the horses showed plenty of dash and took their fences in fine style. The horsemanship was splendid and this was a factor in the excellent standard of jumping provided There was very little between the first three horses and all were up to championship standard. The results were as follows:— Dominion Centennial Royal Championship Jumping Competition Run in heats. £lBO and trophies as follows: 40 guineas trophy presented by Mr A. McDonald (Masterton) and Mr W. T. Hazlett (Invercargill); 15 guineas trophy presented by New Zealand Breweries. GRAND FINAL First £45 and trophy valued 40 guineas presented by Mr W. T.
