CHAMPIONSHIP JUMPING

First Heat Won By

Manco

KEEN INTEREST SHOWN IN EVENTS

The decision of the first heat of the Dominion Centennial Royal Championship Jump was a great attraction during the afternoon, and with competitors from as far north as Carterton and Palmerston North participating, the decisions were keenly followed. The championship event carries a stake of £lBO in addition to valuable trophies, and some of the best jumping horses in the Dominion took part in the first heat yesterday. Five horses qualified yesterday for the final, which is to be run on Thursday, and in the second heat, to be run today, another five will qualify. The course was one of 16 fences —eight brushes, six panel fences and two hen coops—and it thoroughly tested the ability of the candidates. The fences were specially made for this year’s Royal Show and competitors from different centres considered them the best yet seen in any show ring. POPULAR SUCCESS The winner of the first heat was the Pembroke representative, Manco, ridden by Miss Aubrey, who scored 77 points of a possible of 80. Miss Aubrey, who rode the winner, gave a splendid display of horsemanship and was warmly applauded on her success. The second horse, Scout, was brought down from Carterton for this event, and he, too, gave an accomplished exhibition. Scout is one of the champion show ring jumpers of the North Island and has a long list of successes to his credit. Another North Island candidate to qualify was Tip Toes, who finished third. A white in colour, Tip Toes, who is owned at Palmerston North, was excellently handled by another lady rider, Miss F. Smith. The other two to qualify were also close up in points. Tip Toes later in the day won the competition for the best jumper to be ridden by a lady, when Miss Smith was again in the saddle. Her second representative in this event, Scout, finished second.

The maiden jump, over a course of eight fences, was keenly contested, but several of the horses were inclined to slip into their fences. The winner, Mr J. L. Hazlett’s Captain Reid, gave a first-class exhibition, while Mr H. Blackmore’s Last Chance, who finished second, also pleased greatly. The pony jump was actually won by F. Blackie’s Peter, but he was disqualified for being more • than the specified height of 13.2 hands. H. Blackmore’s Chance was then awarded first from Patricia Pottinger’s Trimmer. A HIGH STANDARD In commenting on the performances in the championship heat, the judge, Mr L. V. Caverhill, said that the jumping right through had been of a good standard, but several horses were inclined to be too careful. ‘The performance of the winner, D. C. Aubrey’s Manco, had been a particularly good one. Out of a possible of 80 points he had scored 77, and this gave some idea of the merit of his effort. “The jumping in the event for lady riders was of a pleasing standard,” commented the judge, “and the winner, Miss Jean Bennett’s Tip Toes; gave a perfect exhibition to score the possible of 40 points. The horsemanship in all sections was of a high standard, particularly that of the lady riders.” The programme of events was run off without a hitch and, in spite of the record fields, the events were concluded in good time. The second heat of the championship jump will be run today and, as great interest has been aroused in this event, the performances of the various candidates will be closely followed. ■ Results were:
