BEEF CATTLE
ABERDEEN ' ANGUS The best of the cattle exhibited in the Aberdeen Angus classes were well up to Royal show standard but there were many moderate sorts entered. “Good and bad, with the ‘good’ well up to Royal standards,” commented the judge (Mr J. W. Morrison). Roberts and Company (Gladbrook Station, Middlemarch) won the bull championship with a beautifully-fleshed animal, the four-year-old Jubal Eric, which sired the winner of the yearling bull class. Jubal Eric was a bull of great scale and would hold its own anywhere. The reserve championship was won by R. > Fraser’s (Tokanui) Grange of Makaretu, but although he was a useful type of bull he was hardly up to Royal Show standard. In the class for two-year-old bulls, there was little between the three entries forward and the standard was nothing to become enthusiastic about. R. K. Ireland’s (Oamaru) Abel of Ribbonwood won the class, but according to the judge the second bull, Artie of Ribbonwod, exhibited by the same owner, handled best and would have won but for being lame.
The yearling bull class was won by Roberts and Company without competition. Erebus of Gladbrook, sired by the champion bull, was an animal of good quality. D. G. Grant’s (Dannevirke) Perdita of Jardine won the championship in the female section. This cow was a four-year-old imported animal and showed up as an excellent type. Roberts and Company won the reserve championship with Pride of Gladbrook, a two-year-old which might have won the championship but for the fact that she had just started to breed whereas the champion had reared calves. There were no faults to be found in either.
Genista of Jardine, exhibited by D. G. Grant, won the class for three-year-olds, but it did not have the points of the winners of the two-year-old or four-year-old classes. The senior yearling winner, Pride of Mangatoto, also exhibited by D. G. Grant, was an outstanding type. The runner-up, R. Fraser’s Annie of Heathfield, was another good animal but it did not parade well in the ring. There was little outstanding in the junior class, but the group class winner shown by Roberts and Company stood out in the class.
