OBITUARY
MR GEORGE W. LINES

HASTINGS, December 12.
Hawke’s Bay’s oldest resident, Mr George William Lines, of Hastings, passed away last evening after a remarkably long life of 102 years and nine months.
Mr Lines was born at Salford (Bedfordshire) on March 29, 1837, a few weeks before Queen Victoria came to the throne, consequently he could claim to having lived under six rulers of the British Empire. MR A SMUTS (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, December 11. The death is announced of Mi’ A. Smuts, younger brother of the South African Prime Minister, General J. C. Smuts, aged 65. He took no part in politics, and devoted himself to wheat and wine farming. MR E. R. N. RUSSELL (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 12. The death has occurred of Mr Edward Robert Nolan Russell, senior partner in the legal firm of Russell, McVeagh, Mackay and Barrowclough. Mr Russell was born at Auckland 70 years ago and was in practice nearly 50 years. He took no part in public life but was a director of several public ■ companies.
