SWIMMING

Southland Title Events INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR MEN’S 100 YARDS RECORD BROKEN The Southland junior and intermediate swimming championships were begun in the Municipal Tepid Baths last evening. The swimming and diving were of a good standard and were enjoyed by a fair attendance of spectators. No records were broken, but some new champions were found. A feature of the evening was the special attempt by A. C. Millar (ExPupils’ Club) on the Southland mens 100 yards freestyle record of 59 4-ssec, held by P. H. McGrath. Millar put up a unique performance by breaking the record twice during the evening. He swam the distance in 59 3-ssec in his heat of the 100 yards freestyle handicap, but because the starter (Mr Arthur Kingsland) failed to say <( go (( when he despatched Millar at six the record could not be claimed. Millar made a second attempt in the final of the event and bettered his first time by two-fifths of a second, taking 59 l-ssec for the distance. He thus actually broke the record twice in the evening. He was warmly applauded for his success. Other features were the fine form of Miss Joyce Macdonald in winning the open freestyle handicap in the fast time of lmin 14 4-ssec, and the success of Miss K. Westerby over her sister, Miss B. Westerby, in the 220 yards intermediate championship. The championshipswill be continued tomorrow evening. TECHNICAL COLLEGE GIRLS’ SPORTS ONE RECORD BROKEN AT ANNUAL FIXTURE The annual swimming sports of the Southland Technical College girls were held at the municipal baths yesterday morning. Although the entries were not particularly large the standard of performance was high. No records were broken for swimming events but a new

record was established for the long plunge. The senior championship was won by A. Shaw who swam well to gain 11 points. M. Croft and J. Findlay tied for second place, each securing four points. Honours in the junior championship went to D. Clark who secured 13 points and J. Macgregor was second with eight points. Tokomaru House was the winner of the house competition. M. Croad, of Arawa House, set a new record for the long plunge, her distance being 45ft sin. The previous record was 44ft and was established by J. Menzies last year. An exhibition was given during the morning by Miss Joyce Macdonald, New Zealand backstroke champion and a former pupil of the school. The sports were efficiently controlled by the baths superintendent (Mr H. S. Baker) and his assistant (Mr H. G. Smith), with the help of members of the teaching staff.
