Mr John Macdonald returned to Invercargill by the express last night. Mr R. McCay, secretary of the Royal Agricultural Society, has arrived in Invercargill for the Centennial Royal Show. Messrs R. T. Baker and H. Denton left Invercargill by the express yesterday morning for Levin where they will go into camp as medical orderlies in the New Zealand Air Force. Before his departure Mr Baker received gifts from the Imhotep Club, the Rechabites Lodge and the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Bible Class, of which he was a member.
Mr H. H. Dobie, manager at Dunedin for the Union Steam Ship Company, who has been transferred to the managership of the Christchurch branch, will be succeeded by Mr G. F. Booth, assistant manager at Melbourne. Mr Dobie was bom at Invercargill and jo" .ed the company’s service here in 1914. ’ In 1918 he went overseas on active service, resuming duty at Timaru in 1919. In 1927 he was given charge of the Blenheim branch, and was appointed manager at Timaru in 1934. He assumed charge at Dunedin three years later. Mr Booth was born at Manuka Creek in 1887 and joined the company’s service in Dunedin in 1902. He was transferred to the pursers’ staff in 1904 and to the head office in 1907, remaining there until 1913,* when he was appointed to the Auckland office. In 1914 he was again transferred to the head office staff, and left on active service two years later, rejoining the company at Dunedin in 1919. In 1922 he was appointed claims clerk at Wellington, and in 1930 chief clerk in the Dunedin branch, transferring again to head office in 1932. In 1935 he was appointed assistant manager at Melbourne.
