CLAIM FOR PAYMENT FOR LAND
ACTION IN COMPENSATION COURT ! ' (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 5. Land at the estuary of the Hutt river taken by the Government by proclamation for reclamation works was the subject of argument in the Compensation Court today. The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) was the respondent and the claimants were Alexander Kenneth Scobie McKenzie and Cheviot Wellington Dillon Bell, solicitors, as the registered proprietors, and Margaret Sara Johnston (wife of Mr Justice Johnston), Iris Brenda Rolleston, a widow, Beatrix Enid Bell, a spinster, Violet Caroline Denniston, a married woman, and Cheviot Wellington Dillon Bell as beneficial owners. The claimants contended they advised the Government that their price for the 21 acres, 2 roods, 8 points, 8 perches would be £750 an acre, whereas the Government offered them £5OOO for the whole of the land. The claim was for £17,244. The first witness, Cheviot Bell, had not completed his evidence when the Court adjourned. Tomorrow morning the Court will inspect the locality.
