THREE-YEAR-OLDS AT WAIRIO

Turco Is Promising Colt CHEVAL D’ORO WILL IMPROVE The three-year-olds which contested the Juvenile Stakes at Wairio on Saturday were an outstanding lot, and point to the classic events of the Winton and Wyndham Clubs being keenly contested. The majority of juveniles seen out on Saturday were well forward, and each year the value of three-year-old events in Southland is being further demonstrated. The form of Turco and Cheval D’Oro, winner and runner-up respectively of the Wairio race, will bring them into favour for the Winton Juvenile Stakes during the holidays. , . Turco was the winner on Saturday, but Cheval D’Oro was unlucky m the running and at one stage was conceding the leaders about 60 yards. To get within a length of, the winner was a particularly fine effort and Cheval D’Oro may improve more, than any other produced on Saturday. Turco, who is by Rey de Oro, is a neat type of juvenile and a very bold pacer. He is not big but compactly made and is a typical Rey de Oro. He gave the impression that he will stay well. In the birdcage after the race Turco showed a sign of waywardness and if this does not hinder his . career, he should go a long way. Wrackadoa, the dam of Turco, is a Wrack mare from a fine pony pacer in Soda, by Harold Dillon from Franca, by Vancleve from Hush, who- was also by Vancleve. CHEVAL D’ORO

Cheval D’Oro’s effort was probably more impressive than that of the winner, as he was hopelessly out of it at one stage. Over the last half-mile he completed his task like a tradesman and was finishing on in second place. The rage, is certain to improve him. Cheval D’Oro,’ is also by Rey de Oro and he, too, gives the idea that he will come to hand early. His dam, Enns Princess, an Erin’s King mare who won races over all distances a few seasons back, won several events in Southland. Cheval D’Oro showed a lot of ability when worked as a two-year-old Iqst season and some interest will be shown in his progress. I ' Margaret Arion is a good type ot filly by Arion Axwofthy from the Rey de Oro mare, Senorita, who comes from a very successful family- Margaret Arion did her work in solid style and while the others finished too strongly for her, she was not disgraced and can be expected to improve. WILL DO BETTER Two Crowns is a neat type, of gelding and is likely to improve with racing. He was always handily placed in the running and finished fourth. Two Crowns is another of the Rey de Oro breed, his dam, Miss Adonis, being a useful winner a few seasons back. She was by Adonis from Misfortune, the dam of Carver Doone, Nelson’s Victory, Dan McGrew and others. Sea Born is a big raking three-year-old and may take more time than the majority. He, is, however, a good actioned pacer and should be heard from later. Sea Born is by Arion Axworthy from Fair Wave, a useful winner by Waverley from Fair Lady, by Our Thorpe from Lady Rothsoon—a member of the same family as Win Soon, a New Zealand Cup winner. Arion Mac is another solid type of gelding that will benefit with racing. He is by Arion Axworthy from Helen McGregor, by Coldstream Bells from Charity Belle.
