LEVEL OF RIVER FALLS

FLOODING IN BLENHEIM DISTRICTS

(United Press Association)

BLENHEIM, December 2.

The level of the Waifau river fell noticeably yesterday afternoon and last night, but road and rail communication with Picton was still blocked. Only large cars can negotiate the south highway to Riverlands, where the water is over the road for a considerable distance. The Nelson main highway is still affected by the Wakamarina river at Canvastown, and the only route available to Nelson is via Tophouse. The flood waters in the Spring Creek and Tuamarina areas have receded but many of the low-lying areas are still covered to a depth of several feet. With clearer weather in the back country and the cessation of rain in the districts near Blenheim there is every indication that the worst of - the flooding is over, ~<v.
