CANDIDATES FOR AIR FORCE

Applicants Of Lower Standard INSTRUCTION CLASSES TO BE HELD “The Air Department has hitherto required that the educational standard of candidates for entry into the Royal Air Force as pilots, observers, or air gunners should approximate to that of the University Entrance or . School Certificate examinations," stated a letter from the Education Department to yesterday’s meeting of the High Schools Board. “It is considered that in the essential subjects of mathematics and of .elementary science, this standard is necessary if any sound knowledge of navigation and of other aeronautical problems is to be obtained. “The Air Department is anxious, however, to afford every opportunity to applicants suitable in other ways, but of a lower standard than that deemed i necessary so that they may qualify themselves for entry to the flying branches of the Air Force. With this object in new, it is proposing shortly, as a war measure, to establish classes in any centre in which a reasonable number of candidates, otherwise suitable, is available, and. to provide a course of instruction in mathematics and an elementary science. These classes will be held mainly in the evenings or on Saturday mornings, and the instructors’ salaries will be paid by the Air Department. “The Education Departmem. has been asked to co-operate by providing classroom and other facilities where these are already available, and I should be glad if you would do what you can to assist. The necessary arrangements are in the hands of Mr E. Caradus, senior inspector of secondary schools, who will be attached temporarily to the Air Force as Director of Educational Services. He will communicate with you from Air Force Headquarters about the matter if it is decided to establish such a class in your centre and to make use of any facilities which you may be disposed to provide.” jit was decided that the board and its teaching staff should be prepared to give any co-operation required.
