PRODUCE ON CITY RESERVES
POTATOES PLANTED IN PREPARED AREAS MUCH WORK STILL TO BE DONE The progress made in the growing of produce on city reserves was the subject of a report submitted by the superintendent of reserves (Mr B. P. Mansfield) to the Invercargill City Council last evening. “Although the work has been considerably advanced during the period much remains to be done before it can be claimed that the project will be carried through to a successful conclusion,' stated the report. “With the aid of all the mechanical devices at the disposal of the men working to capacity, and consistent effort on the part of the men, ground has been brought in rapidly and worked up satisfactorily. All areas prepared to date are planted with potatoes, including the old pound site. “The area prepared at Lake Hawkins and an area west of Lindisfarne road and north of the railway, now being prepared, will be sown with swede turnips. Carrots will not be sown this seaAdvice was received from the Industrial Emergency Council of the Department of Labour that it had no objection to the agreement made between the council and the men employed on the work for the variation of the industrial award to enable the men to work in shifts. r . A visit of inspection of the plots under cultivation .will be made by the members of the reserves committee tomorrow afternoon.
