COLONEL MACKY’S APPOINTMENT
Auckland Battalion Command BRILLIANT WAR RECORD RECALLED (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 7. Restored to the reserve of officers of the New Zealand military forces last week, Colonel N. L. Macky, M.C., has been appointed to command the 21st Auckland Battalion in the second echelon of the Second (N.Z.) Division. With other officers of the echelon from the Northern Military District, Colonel Macky will enter camp at Narrow Neck tomorrow for a refresher course. He is dropping a “star” to take an appointment as a lieutenant-colonel. Colonel Macky was one of the fourofficers who were posted to the retired list last year following the issuing of a manifesto on May 18. Throughout the Great War Colonel Macky served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He was awarded the Military Cross for his work in leading two platoons of his battalion to the capture of Flers on the Somme in September 15, 1916. It was on this day that tanks were first used. At the Armistice, he was the only officer in his battalion who was with it when the battalion was formed.
