News About Broad Small’s Recent Fire ■| H MH M H I|| j| | I | jI I S> • ’ M -\; K ’ Hll i I • « ,„.. > ; t ,k’\ £«P ' ;' i Bk ’ s-,'-, ' ' ;.?£ ■► -k ; w*. ~ I B^i.--.,iU? ; S it : * /. </, < * I '^> 4 ”®\ f/ ' i; " ’ MMT-.; I I /IBff* Damage to the extent of about £lO,OOO was caused by the fire which tore through the well-stocked timber yard of Messrs Broad Small Ltd., in Tyne Street last Thursday afternoon. The photograph taken from the roof of the firm’s cabinet-making factory, shows the upholstery shop half-an-hour after the outbreak occurred. A total of about 250,000 feet of timber was reduced to ashes. THANKS We wish to take this opportunity of publicly thanking members of the Fire Brigade, Police Force and all others who so readily came to our aid and rendered us willing and valuable help during the recent disastrous fire at our factory in Tyne Street. We greatly appreciated th® l * assistance and we cannot say too many words of praise in their favour. We wish also to thank all those who sent messages of condolence. ★ ★ Despite the capable assistance rendered by the very many helpers, the devastating spread of the flames fanned by the strong westerly wind, could not be checked before it had swept through many timber stacks and on to the store building, where hundreds of pounds worth of furniture, including several of the upholstered suites which were awaiting delivery, were totally consumed. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to those customers whose furniture was burnt. BUSINESS AS USUAL < ~ But even whilst the fire was still raging, out of all control, the Principals of the business were very active taking steps to purchase new stocks of timbers and materials and to house the Upholstery Department. The machines and tools, removed from the burning upholstery buildings by the willing helpers were shifted to the premises lately occupied by the Waitaki Dairy Federation, where the next morning, with the fresh stocks of materials, the staff was comfortably installed, working with renewed energy to complete orders so that delivery might be made with as little delay as possible. UNDAMAGED UPHOLSTERY COVERINGS It was fortunate that all upholstery coverings, of. which there are over two hundred designs, are always stored at our Dee Street premises which, of course, are far removed from the scene of the fire. , These materials comprise the latest high grade coverings from the English markets, and to all clients the usual large and choice selection is assured. , CONCERNING THE WOODWORK FACTORY We are very happy to report that our modern furniture factory, fully equipped with thousands of pounds worth of the latest cabinet making machinery, remained absolutely untouched by the fire. NEW STOCKS OF SEASONED TIMBERS NOW ON HAND We have also had the good fortune, through the kindness of many of our business associates, of receiving fresh supplies of THOROUGHLY DRIED AND WELL SEASONED BEST GRADE . TIMBERS.
