MILITARY AID FOR CHINA

MISSION ARRIVES AT CHUNGKING REPORTED MOVEMENT OF TROOPS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 19, 10.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 18. A despatch from the correspondent of The New York Tinies at Shanghai states that advices received by usually reliable foreign circles in Chungking report that a large Soviet military mission arrived at Chungking from Moscow, travelling in five aeroplanes.

The mission consists of many experts and advisers on aerial, tank, artillery and infantry matters. Reports of its arrival have caused consternation in Japanese circles.

The Shanghai correspondent of the United Press of America says rumours are circulating about the Russian delegation in Chungking. China and Russia may sign a military alliance soon. The Chinese are reported to have said that the Russians will be styled as advisers to China at present but actually they will be discussing with Marshal Chiang Kai-shek far-reaching agreements.

A Nationalist representative says that Britain and France have refused further aid to China because of the war, and the United States has not offered effective assistance. Thus China had no choice but to turn to Russia. It is also reported that Russia has sent large bodies of troops into Sinkiang. SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN TO GIVE SERVICE (British Official Wireless) (Received October 19, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, October 18. At a meeting in London of more than 100 South African women resident in Britain, plans were made to enable voluntary workers to give the war services for which they are best qualified. Swein Bjoernsson, Icelandic Minister at Copenhagen, is now in London to discuss trade questions arising out of the war.
