PIPE MUSIC CONTESTS
To The Editor Sir, —With the approach of the Southland athletic sports circuit, I would like to make, through your columns, a constructive suggestion to societies conducting competitions. Why not follow the usual procedure in band contests and some of the northern Caledonian sports, and put the judge in a tent? Let the competitors draw for places immediately before each competition commences and let him judge by the numbers, not names. The important point, of course, is that the judge must not know, through the steward, or by any other means, who is playing. It is no reflection on the judge; and if it is made impossible for him to be guilty of favouritism, then he cannot be accused of such. Incidentally some of the judges and also many who consistently win on their reputations may get some surprises. The first meeting is at Otautau, and I hope that this society will adopt the suggestion and that others will follow. —Yours, etc., COMPETITOR. October 18, 1939.
