BEQUESTS MADE TO SCHOOLS
(Special to The Times)
DUNEDIN, October 19.
Mr G. C. Proudfoot, who attended the Otago Boys’ High School from 1865 to 1868, has shown his affection for his old school by making provision in his will for setting aside £2500 to provide scholarships at both the Otago Boys’ High School and the Otago Girls’ High School. Mr Proudfoot, who left no relations, died last month and at today’s meeting of the Board of Governors of the schools notification of the bequest was received from a firm of solicitors. It was stated that the legacy was one of the most outstanding received by the board. The will provides for an award to each of the schools on the results of the university scholarship examination of: (a) one scholarship of £25 per annum, tenable for three years at the University of Otago; (b) two scholarships of £lO per annum tenable for one year at the high school concerned; and (c) the balance, if any of the annual income to be used in giving a prize or prizes for such subject or subjects as the trustee may think fit, and, in particular, in the case of the boys’ school, for gymnastics, athletics sports, cadet work and especially for shooting; and in the case of the girls’ school for gymnastics, athletics and sports. It was decided that the scholarships should become tenable next year.
