EASY WIN FOR OLD BILL

Peter Beckford Pulls

Up Lame DISDAIN A COSTLY FAILURE (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, October 19. Aussie Ra and Clarion Call were preferred to Peter Beckford in the Glen Hurdles but the last-named beat them both. He went to the front early and by some excellent jumping gamed ground at each fence from Esperance Bay, who endeavoured to go with nim throughout. Clarion Call moved up into second place approaching the last fence and challenged Peter Beckford but the latter, with another brilliant effort, was able to hold his place and although Clarion Call crept up on him in the run to the post he was never in real danger of being overhauled. Esperance Bay held on for a fair third two lengUis in front or Donegal, with Aussie Ra, Ruaform and Jewish Lad together six lengths away. This was Peter Beckford’s third success in his three starts over hurdles. He has always suffered from unsoundness and pulled up very lame after this race. AN EASY WIN The Taita Handicap, for two-year-olds, was an easy proposition for the third choice, Cetewayo, a well-grown colt by Phaleron Bay from Chelae, the the dam of Limulus, a winner in Australia. He was in front early and had a length lead from Flying Spy turning on to the course proper. He increased his lead in the run home and had a wide margin to spare at the post from the warm favourite, Black Robe, with a bigger gap to Flying Spy. Khurja, Locrian and Wild Fox were next. This was the winner’s first appearance and he is the first representative of Phaleron Bay in New Zealand to win. His effort was certainly very impressive. OLD BILL’S SUCCESS Beaupartir, having his second race of the season, was elected first choice in the Wainui Handicap but after being well placed at the home turn failed to take part in the finish. Old Surrey acted as pacemaker in the early stages and was still in front entering the straight from Lord Moutoa, Winning Rival, Beaupartir, Mishna, Old . Bill and Haughty Winner all fairly well bunched. This lot spread out when headed for home and Old Bill, taking advantage of an opening on the fence, was soon in front and carried on for a decisive win from Mishna, who outstayed Old Surrey. Haughty Winner was a length away and was followed by Royal Star 11, Beaupartir, Boomerang, Arctic King and The Bigot. A BUNCHED FINISH The Rimutaka Hack Handicap resulted in a close finish, four horses crossing the line in a bunch. Great Legion was the early leader and was still in charge on to the course proper from Harina, Lindrum, Sleeveless, Lady Tinkle and Grey Night. Harin soon went to the front with Grey Night moving up on the inside and Sleeveless and Sternchase on the outside. All four engaged in a stirring struggle, Sleeveless gaining a half-head verdict from Grey Night, with another half head to Stemchase, who beat Harina by a head. Gipsy and Lady Tinkle headed the remainder. This was the winner’s fourth success in four races this season, and he won at his last start as a two-year-old. The favourite, Kahui, was never in evidence. WELLINGTON HANDICAP Lady Furst, second choice for the Wellington Handicap, led the field

throughout. She was followed through the back stretch by Sly Fox, Yours Truly, Wagner, Centrepoise, Dictate and Rabble. Lady Furst had a clear advantage from Wagner, Sly Fox and Peerless together, entering the straight with Yours Truly and Rabble handy. None of these had any chance of troubling Lady Furst, who ran home a very easy winner. In a close tussle for second honours Tooley Street, who put in a remarkable run in the straight, got up to beat Centrepoise and Yours Truly. Lowenberg was next in front of Dictate, Might and Sly Fox. ENRICH’S CLASSIC Several late withdrawals reduced the field for the Wellesley Stakes to eight runners and there was a close dispute for favouritism between Taitama, Absolve and Enrich. Miss Hallomet was first out, Absolve losing several lengths and soon being hopelessly out of the contest. Miss Hallomet led on to the course proper, but a furlong from home Enrich had taken charge and soon decided the issue by a pointless victory from Miss Hallomet, who just lasted to hold off Ringcraft. Beau Coureur was next in front of Indore, Absolve, and Taitama. DISDAIN FAILS Disdain was a costly failure in the Shorts Handicap. She drew No. 1 and moved out well but was never in a winning position. Density soon rushed tu the front and led on to the course proper from Submission, Blonde Princess, and Gay Parade, with Baran and Disdain next. Density still had charge 100 yards from the post, but Baran on the inside then overhauled her and the latter looked to be a winner until Mittie appeared on the outside. Mittie caught Baran near the post and won going away. Density weakened into a good third placing, a length in front of Submission, with Disdain in close attendance. OVERDUE WIN The concluding event, the 'October Handicap, provided an exciting tussle between Raeburn and Classform. The former took charge at the straight entrance from Verey Lights, Indian Sun and Red Chief. Raeburn had these beaten off when Classform threw out a belated challenge. Classform had his head in front a stride off the post, but his rider then eased up on him enabling Raeburn, who was under continuous riding, to get up on the line for a narrow verdict. Red Chief was a good third a length in front of Indian Sun, with Colonel Bogey and Verey Lights next. This was Reaburn’s second win only, but he was very lucky as Classform had only to be kept going to have held his advantage. CAMBRIDGESHIRE STAKES (Received October 19, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 18. THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE STAKES, run at Newmarket, resulted:—

CLASS I.—Gyroscope 1. His Highness 2, Hot Bun 3. CLASS 2. —Orichalque 1, QuartierMaitre 2, Never Surprised 3.
