LORD NUFFIELD’S CHANCE IN SPRINT
The Gore Racing Club’s spring meeting, which opens tomorrow and concludes on Monday, marks the opening of the 1939-40 racing season in Southland. The fields in all events are of good strength, and with quality well represented the racing promises to be of a high standard. Form at early spring meetings is always difficult to follow, and for this reason horses with recent racing to their credit may be preferred. The majority of the best handicap horses in Southland are down to put in an appearance while Wingatui stables are also well represented, as well as Washdyke and Riccarton.
The two principal events —the Waikaka Handicap and the Flying Handicap—have been keenly discussed since the appearance of the weights and in neither race is there any outstanding favourite so far. Sailing Lady, Roy Bun, Mona’s Song and Monipere are the favoured division /while the tvzo New Zealand Cup candidates,’in the field, Thermidor and Made Money, will also attract attention. In the sprint event the best credentials appear to be held by Lord Nuffield, Phalanx and Skyrena, while Flagman and Boswell will be entitled to respect.
The fields right through will assure an interesting day’s racing, and have justified the decision of the club in maintaining stake money at last year’s level. The first race will start at 12.30 p.m. and the win-and-place system of betting will operate. Special train arrangements have been made. All men in uniform will be admitted free of charge. A report from Gore last evening indicated that the track, which was carrying a good sole of grass, would be in fast order. /
