SCRUB FIRES NEAR AWARUA SIDING

BREAK TO PROTECT YOUNG TREES Fires in the scrub near Awarua Siding which have been burning for some days yesterday threatened a plantation of young trees and, to make a break for their protection, fires were lit over a wide front. Huge columns of smoke were clearly visible from all parts of Invercargill yesterday and at night a glow could be seen in the sky. The scrub fires are burning to the south of the Awarua wireless station and it was stated yesterday that there was no danger to the station. The fires lit to make a break would assist in protecting the station.
