APPLEBY AND CELTIC DRAW GOOD BATTING BY GORE TEAM The first cricket match of the season took place at Biggar street on Saturday afternoon when Appleby and Celtic (Gore) played their annual fixture. The game ended in a draw. Celtic, batting first, made 191. and Appleby scored 116 for six wickets. Dunnet and Logan opened for Celtic and were going well when the latter was run out for 26. Henderson took his place and added aus ft 1 37. Dunnet was caught at 48, and J. Taylor made 25. Sievwright was the most successful Appleby bowler, taking three wickets for 31 runs. Appleby’s opening batsmen Groves and Smith, failed to get going. A newcomer to the club, 3ray, made a useful 19 and Spence contributed top score with 28. Ramsay and Sievwright were going well with 14 and 20 respectively when stumps were drawn. Bowling for Celtic Taylor took two wickets for 11 runs. Details were:—

INVERCARGILL BEATS WINTON

POLLOK IN GOOD FORM In a friendly cricket match played at Winton on Saturday afternoon, Invercargill beat Winton by 180 runs to 116. Pollok was the top scorer for Invercargill and retired with 65 runs. For Winton, Dixon, a young player headed the batting and made 34 before being bowled by Noble. Details were:—

OLD BOYS BEATEN BY RIVERTON

J. W. BLIGHT’S GOOD SCORE The Old Boys team travelled to Riverton on Saturday, playing a match with the local team on the recreation ground. Riverton had a good win. While batting J. Buchanan had the misfortune to hurt his knee, but after receiving treatment he resumed at the fall of the next wicket. The Rev. J. W. Blight, f.e Riverton skipper, declared Riverton’s innings closed at the tea interval with seven wickets in hand. Blight, with 80, looked set for a century, but his wicket fell to a ball from Clark. Seven 6’s were knocked up during the afternoon. The scores were:

OFFICIAL OPENING AT BORSTAL

The recreation ground at the Borstal on Saturday wore a gala appearance on the occasion of the official opening of the cricket season This popular event has been held annually for a number of years. Before a large gathering of visitors, officers and inmates, Mr R. W Arnold (superintet dent) welcomed the guests and apologized for the non-appearance of the Mayor, who was otherwise engaged. He referred briefly to the value of cricket as a training in discipline on and off the field; to the fact that the boys’ team last year again won the Times Cup. Mr R. Taylor, president of the Southland Cricket Association, referred to

the work at the institution and spoke in glowing terms of the ability of Mr W. Baker, the Borstal coach, and the excellent work he had done with the material at his disposal. Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., briefly expressed his appreciation and interest in the work at the Borstal and congratulated the lads on their successes. Mr J. Pickard, on behalf of the Mayor, wished all a pleasant afternoon, and declared the 1939 cricket season open. A match between officers and boys was played, and resulted in a substantial win for the boys. Observing the custom of previous years, members of the Battalion Band supplied music which was much appreciated by all. During the afternoon tea adjournment a party of Maoris presented several hakas and action songs.

FRIENDLY MATCHES IN EASTERN DISTRICT

Friendly cricket matches were played on the hostel grounds on Saturday afternoon in ideal weather. The outfields were in good order and some fair scores were registered during the afternoon. A team representing the Gore Club beat a High School eleven by a fair margin of runs, while the Celtic junior team scored a good win over the Mataura Club’s junior eleven. The Gore team batted first in its match against High School and scored 176 runs. Macara was top scorer for the side with 43 not out. O’Shea, who scored 32, and Kerr, who scored 29, also batted well. Reynolds and Hunt bowled well for High School, both taking four wickets. Reynolds secured the best average. High School replied with 79, Hunt and Edwards being top scorers with 18 runs each.
