SOUTHLAND FAT LAMBS
COMPETITION TO BE CONTINUED COMMITTEE TO ARRANGE DATE A decision to continue the fat lamb competition, as modified by the New Zealand Meat Board, was made by the directors of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday afternoon. , Mr John Gilkison said he thought they should carry on the fat lamb competition, as it had a fine educational influence and gave a splendid opportunity for a field day. He was strongly of opinion that they should ask the Meat Board supervisors to co-operate with Mr W. Falconer in judging on the hooks. He recommended that a special competition be held for the Lake County area. . Dr A. F. Ritchie Crawford said that for some months past farmers had been preparing for that competition without a thought of war. He thought it ■would throw their competition back if it was allowed to drop for one, two or three years. , Mr Falconer expressed the view that the second week in January would be more suitable than late December for the judging of the lambs, as farmers would be busy in December with the Royal Show at Invercargill. It was decided to carry on the competition and it was left to the competition committee to arrange a suitable date.
