Effect Of Sunshine Created With Yellow Furnishings

It is only lately that people have begun to realize the magical effect of yellow in furnishing, and yet, in the case of dark, badly lit rooms, or rooms that face south and get very little sun, no other colour gives such satisfactory results. It is such a joyful colour the colour of sunlight, of gay summer flowers, of radiant broom and gorse, oi gleaming gold itself! . A dull room is instantly brightened if the walls are papered or distempered a soft, sunny yellow and then varnished. A shiny surface reflects the light so much better than a dull one. The woodwork could be painted a very pale yellow, so pale as to be almost ivory and resembling as nearly as possible the exquisite golden tint which sunshine always throws over white paint. A bedroom decorated in this way would be most effective, especially with the addition of primrose-coloured cushions and curtains and an eiderdown of brown and gold. A yellow bathroom with yellow walls, yellow porcelain fittings, and yellow patterned oil-silk curtains and yellow towels is far more cheerful than the conventional blue or green one. The great charm of yellow is that it is the one colour that need never become monotonous. The shades are so varied that a room can be furnished entirely in yellow colourings that tone delightfully, and yet no two of them need be alike. They range from a deep, rich orange through the various tints of lemon-yellow to a soft parchment tint, and from fascinating shades of oldgold that resemble burnished copper to pale crocus colours. Yellow can also be introduced successfully into practically any other colour scheme, and will always add a welcome note of warmth pnd brightness.
