Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., referring in the House to the gold held by the Reserve Bank: Is the gold in New Zealand? The Hon. Walter Nash: I think so. I have never seen it, but I think it must be there. —Report of Parliamentary debate.

There’s Gold along the Riverbed And Gold among the Hills And Gold in the hollow Teeth The happy Dentist fills; There’s Gold beneath the Glacier And scattered in the Sand, And Gold in the little Shops That buy it second-hand. And Governments, if prudent, Put Lots of it away To reinforce the Currency Against a rainy Day: Though No-one ever sees it And No-one seems to care, It seems to give them comfort To know the Gold is there.

Yes, even small New Zealand Secretes its little Hoard, Two Millions odd (a paltry Sum,. But all we can afford); The Guardian of this Treasure Is Mr L. Lefeaux, But where it is, is Something else That No-one seems to know. They up and asked the Minister: Where do those Ingots lie? To which the Minister returned The following Reply: “They may be in New Zealand, “I think they must be here”— An answer which, you must admit, Is neither frank nor clear.

So I am off to Parliament, Determined to be told, With no more Shilly-shallying, » Where they have put my Gold: Supposing they mislaid it! The Notion jars my Nerves. Why are they so reserved about Reserving my Reserves?
