WINTON

TABLE TENNIS CLUB FORMED A table tennis club has been formed at Winton by several enthusiastic players. The formation of the. club has resulted from a table tennis evening held during recreation week which was a big success. Office-bearers were elected as follows:—Patron, Mr T. Walker; president, Mr G. Sadlier; vice-presidents, Dr P. Gow, the Rev. J. Newlands, Messrs W. Brandford, F. Tilley and N. Metzger; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. Lindsay; committee, Messrs R. Goodall, C. Kettle, G. Hamilton and R. Horsburgh. A donation of 12 balls by Mr Tilley was accepted with thanks. It was decided that play be held on Tuesday and Friday evenings. It was mentioned that the Borough Council had offered the use of the old Athenaeum building for the sport for three months without charge. BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS The secretary (Mr W. J. Bennett) of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs in the Central district, reports that entries for the various projects of the clubs total 295, compared with 220 for last season. There has been a marked advance in vegetable growing, some 34 entries having been received. CRICKET The, Winton Cricket Club’s team to play Invercargill at Winton today is as follows:—J. Wood (captain). F. Rawle, W. Bews, W. Simmers, A. Mennie, A. Mathias, D. Dixon, Marshall, D. Blyth, Dalgety. PERSONAL Mr D. Dixon, of Winton, who leaves for the Waikato military camp tomorrow evening, was bidden farewell by his fellow employees at Doherty and Company’s Limeworks, Centre Bush, yesterday afternoon. In making a presentation of a fountain pen, pencil and holdall outfit on behalf of the employees, Mr S. Harris wished Mr Dixon the best of luck and success in any activities in which he might take part. Messrs C. Watson, D. Boyd and T. Morgan also spoke. Mr Dixon replied.
