ANGLICAN CHURCH AND “WET” CANTEENS

To the Editor

Sir,—The Rev. C. J. Tocker saw fit to abuse the Restoration cause and belittle my efforts in sponsoring it before the last election. The public will, I am sure, be glad to know just what Mr Tocker now thinks about the action of the Anglican Synod of Otago and Southland in supporting the establishment of “wet” canteens in military camps. Also, what he thinks about the statement of Archdeacon Whitehead to the effect that “a good publican was as great an asset in the community as a good priest, a good doctor or a good lawyer”; moreover, that “a well-run hotel was as essential to communal life as a church.” Perhaps Mr Tocker will admit that a severe reverse has now been suffered by the Prohibition party and its unfortunate offspring, “No-licence.” If not, is he prepared to say that the Anglican Church is wrong in this matter and to say about its members the things he said about the supporters of the Restoration issue?—Yours, etc., M. H. MITCHEL.
