The Garden Circle of the Women’s Club enjoyed a visit to Mrs C. J. Brodrick’s garden yesterday afternoon, when the members had the opportunity of seeing the many fine shrubs and trees as well as the spring flowers. Mrs H. A. Brumby, chairman, thanked Mrs Brodrick for the pleasant afternoon she had made possible for them. The Georgetown Croquet Club held its official opening for' the 1939-40 season on Wednesday, when an enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mrs Anderson (president) welcomed the visitors from sister clubs, and called on Mr A. W. Jones to open the lawns. Mr Jones congratulated the club on its progress and the improvements made since the club’s inception. The following were the competition winners. The Southland St. John’s Girls’ School Old Girls’ Association held their annual dinner on Wednesday in the Tudor Lounge. The toasts of the evening were: The King (Miss B. Drewe); The School (Mrs A. E. Mathieson, Duke street, on Monday evening. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. Mrs A. Napper and Mrs E. F. O. Smith were elected to the offices of president and secretary respectively. A vote of thanks to the retiring president, Mrs G. E. Mathieson, and the secretary, Mrs F. H. Hughes, was passed. Community singing was enjoyed, and competitions were won by Miss Stevenson and Miss Slater. A birthday cake was cut and a toast with musical honours was drunk to “The Old School.” The club will welcome any past pupils of the Christchurch Girls’ High School and intending members can communicate with the secretary, Mrs E, F. The Foveaux Club, Bluff, held a successful dance in Barber’s Hall, on Tuesday evening at which the officers and engineers of an overseas ship, were the guests of honour. The music for dancing was supplied by Mr Cecil Dixon, Captain N. B. W. Haszard was master of ceremonies, and the hostesses were Mesdames G. Fisher and N. B. W. Haszard. CRIPPLED x CHILDREN SOCIETY

COMMITTEE MEETING OF WOMEN’S AUXILIARY A meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary Executive Committee of the Crippled Children Society was held in the Women’s Club rooms on Wednesday. Those present were Mesdames Corkill (chairman), Russell, Watts, Macdonald, Nichol, Miss Gilkison and Sister Janet. It was reported that on the recommendation of the general executive, a specially-built tricycle is being made for a child who cannot walk to school.' A chair has been supplied to a case. After recommendations by Dr Irwin, special cushioned chairs have been. supplied to two crippled children for sitting in school. There are now six cases at the'Holiday Home, Clyde, and letters were received from two of the girls saying they were very well and happy. The medical sub-committee’s report on five new cases was received. These cases were allotted to members for welfare supervision. The committee decided to investigate the possibility of using Jiand looms for vocational training, and Miss Nan Swanson offered her service for teaching hand weaving. This offer was gratefully accepted. It was decided that two hand looms be bought, these looms to remain the property of the society and be used by cases who will benefit from handwork. It was reported that one case from Bluff had moved to Dunedin. Arrangements will be made with the Dunedin branch of the society to take over her care. The society thanked Miss Nesta Hay for her valuable help with transport. LADIES MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB TROPHIES PRESENTED AT DANCE The Invercargill Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club held a successful dance at Elmwood Garden recently. Mrs J. Robertson, president of the club, welcomed the visitors and club members. She thanked the members for their good attendance during the shooting season and also thanked the coaches without whom the club could not have had a successful year. Mrs Robertson congratulated Miss T. James on winning the Southland championship, also Mrs J. B. Doake on being runner-up in the New Zealand championship. Mr A. Pomeroy presented Miss T. James with the Southland Championship Cup and said how well the Ladies’ Club had done with the shooting. He also congratulated Mrs Doake on winning the Invercargill championship. , Mrs J. Reeves, who was given a bouquet of spring flowers, presented the prizes to the following winners:— A grade championship, Mrs J. B. Doake (Mr Macauley’s trophy). B grade championship, Miss E. James (Mr G. Robertson’s trophy). C grade championship, Miss F. Burdon (Mr J. W. Doake’s trophy). A grade handicap, Mrs J. B. Doake (Mr J. Reeves’s trophy). B grade handicap, Miss R. Jacquiery (Miss Butel’s trophy). C grade handicap, Mrs Brosnan (Mr J. Tansley’s trophy). Hidden bull, Miss G. Gilfedder and Miss T. James (Mrs R. K. Parson’s trophies). Club pairs, Mrs V. Mathieson and Mrs Doake (A. and W. Hamilton’s trophy). Miss E.
