OBITUARY

MR DANIEL TITHER The death has occurred at Edendale of Mr Daniel Tither at the age of 73. Mr Tither was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in the steamship Ruapehu some 52 years ago. He at once came south to Gore and for 17 years followed the occupations of farm labourer, shearer, and rabbiter on the stations on the Waimea Plains. When the balance of the Edendale plain was taken over from the New Zealand and Australian Land Company by the Government early in the present century, Mr Tither was one of the original band of enterprising and industrious settlers who started farming under the lease-in-perpetuity tenure. He remained on his original holding until a few years ago, when the farm was taken over by his son, Mr David Tither, and Mr Tither retired to the Edendale township. Throughout his residence at Edendale, he took a keen interest in all matters affecting the welfare of the district. He took an active interest in dairying matters and at the time of his death was chairman of directors of the Edendale dairy factory. He was also a member of the Edendale Town Board. He was known as a good farmer and an ideal neighbour. In the sporting world he was long associated with racing and trotting, racing several gallopers and trotters at various times. He was also associated with the administrative side of the sport, being a vice-president of the Wyndham Trotting Club and a steward of the Wyndham Racing Club. Mr Tither was also interested in coursing, being successful with several dogs of his own breeding. He was for long connected with the Edendale Sports Society and the Wyndham Pipe Band. A strong supporter of the Catholic Church, Mr Tither was one of the prime movers in having Our Lady of Lourdes Church built at Edendale. Mr Tither married Miss Ellen Collins, of Gore, before settling at Edendale, and his wife died some years ago. He is survived by a family of three daughters and two sons, Misses Minnie Tither (Edendale), Miss Eileen Tither (Milton) and Mrs W. B. Davis (Dunedin), and Messrs David Tither (Edendale) and Mr William Tither (Gore).
