FIVE SHORT OF QUOTA

Tomorrow Night’s Detachment MEN FOR BURNHAM AND WAIKATO DEPARTURE OF PARTY YESTERDAY Eighty-five recruits, five short of the quota, will leave Invercargill by the express tomorrow evening for training at Trentham and Ngaruawahia (Waikato). These men will complete the first echelon. They have been ordered to parade at the railway station at 6 p.m. and to proceed to two carriages at the front of the train, where they will report direct to the conducting officer, Captain J. T. Newall. As soon as the roll has been checked the barricades will be removed and the public will be free to go alongside the carriages. It was stated yesterday by the area officer, Major H. C. MacKenzie, that if the same co-operation was shown by the public tomorrow evening as was forthcoming yesterday morning the checking of the roll should not take more than 10 to 12 minutes, leaving ample time for the men to say farewell to their relations and friends, lhe Battalion Band will march through Dee street to the station, where it will play a number of selections. YESTERDAY’S DRAFT The second big draft of recruits to go to Burnham military camp from Invercargill left by the 7 a.m. express yesterday. The train drew out of the station with 73 recruits in the Rifle and Machine-Gun Battalions on board and to the accompaniment of discordant shrieks from engines and stirring music by the Battalion Band. There were many persons at the railway station to see the men off, but the crowd was not as large as that earlier in the month when 142 members of the special force departed. The sun shone from a cloudless sky and although memories of the Great War kept some relations in sombre mood, the men were in the best of spirits. The two carriages in which the recruits travelled were barricaded off until the troops were on board and the Toll was checked. The public greatly assisted the entraining of the men by waiting patiently until the roll was called; even when the barricade was removed about 6.40 the crowd did not rush the carriages. Those in charge of the contingent were Captain I. O. Manson, Staff Sergeant-Major J. Little and Sergeant A. McGregor. Recruiting for the Maori Battalion will begin next week. South Island Maoris will not be accepted if they are less than quarter-cast; in the North Island they must not be less than

half-caste. Mr R. Spencer, of Bluff, is the recruiting officer for the No. 12 Area, which includes Invercargill, Bluff, Colac Bay, Riverton and Tuatapere. EIGHT ENLISTMENTS YESTERDAY Eight enlistments for the special force were received at the Defence Office, Invercargill, yesterday. They were:— Bellis, Thomas Richard, labourer, Glenorchy. Hair, Edward Allen, hairdresser, Invercargill. McArthur, Peter, electrical engineer, Mataura. McEwan, Edgar Robert, Invercargill. Macleod, William Wallace, Otapiri, Nicolson, John, quarry worker, Clinton. Smyth, Charles Henry Lockwood, labourer, Owaka. Wilson, Robert Aberneathy, farm labourer, Drummond.
